This lesson incorporates the concepts of prediction, context clues, and inference in Charlie Fish's ironic short story "Death By Scrabble"

This lesson focuses on the concepts of rhyme, metaphor, and symbolism as poetic devices using both a short film and a poem to teach these concepts as well as how to annotate poetry and create student-written poems.

This curriculum and set of resources centers around the free-verse novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds and "The Rules" that are presented. By comparing these fictional rules to those presented in Elijah Anderson's non-fiction sociology article "The Code of the Streets" students are both introduced to the novel and will learn to compare types of texts, work collaboratively, and examine challenging non-fiction texts. These resources include two sets of slides, discussion and video question prompts, downloads of the article and video, and a student graphic organizer with a teacher's key.

This curriculum and accompanying resources disect common literary terms including fable and allegory, Satire, rhetoric, symbolism, setting, conflict, theme, and point of view through the use of George Orwell's Animal Farm. By displaying these terms as they are seen in Animal Farm, students can apply their knowledge with context. This set of resources includes slides on literary terms, slides to introduce and analyze chapter 1, a character chart graphic organizer and teacher key, chapter 1 discussion questions, a chapter 1 quiz, and a graphic organizer and exercise on the theme of power in the novel.
